ALLEN , JAMES ( 1802 - 1897 ), dean of S. Davids and antiquary .

Born 15 July 1802 , son of David Bord Allen , rector of Burton, Pembs. ; educated at Westminster and Charterhouse Schools and Trinity College , Cambridge ; B.A. 1825 , M.A. 1829 . He was ordained deacon , 1834 , and priest , 1835 ; he was curate of Miserden, Glos. , 1834-9 , vicar of Castlemartin, Pembs. , 1839-72 , rural dean of Castlemartin , 1840-75 , prebend of S. Davids cathedral , 1847-70 , chancellor and residentiary canon of S. Davids , 1870-8 , rural dean of Dewisland , 1875 , and dean of S. Davids cathedral , 1878-95 .

He m. Isabella Dorothea , daughter of Peter Rickard Hoare of Kilsey Hall , Kent .

He was a good antiquary and a keen member of the Cambrian Archaeological Association ; he devoted much time and money to the restoration of S. Davids cathedral , especially the west front of the nave, the north transept, S. Thomas's Chapel library , and the treasury, and the roofs of bishop Vaughan's chapel and the ante-chapels. He d. 25 June 1897 .
