ANWYL, LEWIS (1705?-1776), cleric and author;
b. at Llandecwyn, Mer., son of William Anwyl, rector of Llanfrothen (1709-13) and of Ffestiniog and Maentwrog (1713-29). In 1723 he became a member of All Souls College, Oxford, and graduated in 1726. He was appointed curate-in-charge of Ysbyty Ifan in 1740, moving to the living of Abergele in 1742. He published at least four works: (a) Y Nefawl Ganllaw, Neu'r Union Ffordd i Fynwes Abraham … Argraphwyd yn y Mwythig, gan R. Lathrop, Tros Dafydd Jones, 1740; (b) Myfyrdodau Wythnosawl …; (c) Cyngor yr Athraw i Rieni …; (b) and (c) are bound with (a); (d) Cristianowgrwydd Catholig, neu Draethawd bŷrr tuagat Leihau gwrth ddadlau Ymhlith Cristianogion … yn enwedig ymhlith y plwyfolion hynny, lle y mae'r Methodistiaid neu Hoffwyr Crefydd y Goleuni newydd yn cael cynhwysiad … Wedi ei gyfieithu o'r ail Argraphiad.
The National Library of Wales has the MSS. of three other translations by Lewis Anwyl: (e) ‘Addysg y Cristion … Gwedi eu cyfieithu or Saesoneg gan Lewis Anwyl, Vicar Abergele’; it has a preface dated 26 Aug. 1766 and includes proposals for printing and publishing this work by subscription; (f) ‘Traethawd Ystoriawl o'r Holl Fibl …’ The preface is dated Abergele, 15 April 1767; it is a translation of J. Hammond's Historical Narrative of the Whole Bible; and (g) a translation of John Mabletoft's preface to his book entitled The Principles and the Duties of the Christian Religion (1710). He d. at Abergele and was buried in the parish church 27 Feb. 1776.
