BEALE, ANNE (1816-1900), writer.
Anne Beale made her home for many years at Llandilo, Carms. She was the author of many novels and stories, mainly for girls, and of a volume of Poems published in 1842, the preface being signed ‘Llwynhelig, Llandilo.’ Several of her novels deal with the manners and customs of the Welsh people. Few English writers have written more appreciatively of Wales. Her works include The Vale of the Towey, or Sketches in South Wales, 1844, reissued as Traits and Stories of the Welsh Peasantry, 1849; Gladys of Harlech, an historical romance, 1858; Rose Mervyn of Whitelake 1879, a story of the Rebecca riots; and Gladys the Reaper, 1881. She also contributed articles on Welsh topics to English periodicals, such as ‘Mr. Superintendent Pryse: a Welsh sketch,’ in Temple Bar, Oct. 1873. She d. at 68 Belsize Road, South Hampstead, 17 April 1900, aged 84.
Anne Beale is not to be confused with Anna Chrysogon Beale, who d., aged 82, 19 Sept. 1917, and was a younger sister of Dorothea Beale, principal of the Ladies’ College, Cheltenham.
