CARTER, ISAAC (d. 1741), printer.
A native of Carmarthenshire, he has the honour of having established the first permanent printing press in Wales. This was at Adpar (also called Trefhedyn) in the parish of Llandyfrïog, Cards., in 1718; as far as is known the first two publications to issue from the press were Cân o Senn i'w hen Feistr Tobacco by Alban Thomas (q.v.) and Cân ar Fesur Triban ynghylch Cydwybod a'i Chynheddfau. At least three other (and larger) works were produced by the Adpar press: Eglurhad o Gatechism Byrraf y Gymanfa, 1719; Dwysfawr Rym Buchedd Grefyddol, 1722; and Y Christion Cyffredin, 1724. The press was transferred to Carmarthen about 1725. From that town came Maddeuant i'r Edifairiol, 1725; Gwaith a Gwobr Ffyddlon Weinidogion yr Efengyl, 1729; Llythyr Bugeilaidd, 1729;. Y Cyfrif Cywiraf o'r Pechod Gwreiddiol, 1730; and Tarian Cristnogrwydd, 1733. Carter m. Ann Lewis at Cenarth, 11 Jan. 1721; he was buried at S. Peter's, Carmarthen, 4 May 1741.
