Born 15 June 1777 at Llandyfaelog, Carmarthenshire. He was at Carmarthen grammar school and later, with the intention of entering the ministry, at the Dissenting Academy at Northampton, whence he went to Glasgow University, graduating there in 1801. After practising at Sheffield, where he also contributed to the Edinburgh Review, he removed to London in 1813, and was appointed physician to Queen Charlotte's Hospital. In 1819 he attended the duchess of Kent at the birth of queen Victoria; and in 1827 became professor of midwifery at University College. He died 4 December 1841.
