Born in New York City, the son of William and Catherine Davies, formerly of Llanuwchllyn, Meironnydd, who moved in 1829 from New York to Bethel, near Remsen, New York State. Trained for the ministry under the tutorship of Morris Roberts (1799 - 1878), of Remsen, he was ordained in 1853, his first charge being the Welsh Congregational church at Waterville, which he held for seventeen years; he was also for seven years pastor of the English Congregational churches of Oriskany Falls and Deansboro. In 1882 he realized an early ambition - he bought Y Cenhadwr, the Welsh Congregational monthly, and moved to Remsen, where the periodical was then published, and became pastor of Peniel and Bethel churches, of which Morris Roberts had had charge. He resigned Peniel after two years and became pastor of Steuben; in 1898 he returned to Waterville, which also became the publishing town of Y Cenhadwr until it ceased publication in 1901.

Davies had travelled extensively, visiting many Welsh settlements in the U.S.A.; in 1866 he accompanied Morris Roberts on a visit to Wales. He was a leading champion of Prohibition in the U.S.A. Besides scores of articles in periodicals, he published Byr Gofiant am y Parch. Llewelyn D. Howell, Utica (Utica, 1866), Grawnwin Aeddfed … yn cynwys Pregethau gan Amryw o Weinidogion yr Annibynwyr yn Nghymru (Utica, 1867), and Cofiant … Morris Roberts (Utica, 1879). He died 8 December 1905.
