DAVIES , EVAN ( 1842 - 1919 ), Calvinistic Methodist minister, and writer ;

b. at the beginning of 1842 at Aberangell, Mer. , he was a farm worker at 10, but became a quarryman at 17; even in youth he interested himself keenly in the history and literature of the region where Merioneth meets Montgomeryshire . Having begun to preach in 1865 , he went to Bala College in 1868 , and in 1873 was ordained pastor of Llangynog ; in Nov. 1875 he removed to Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog , and thence in 1879 to Trefriw , where he remained till his death. Though he became ( 1914 ) moderator of the North Wales C.M. Association , he is best remembered as a most diligent writer and editor . For more than thirty years he was co-editor (with John Morgan Jones , 1838 - 1921 , q.v. ) of Y Lladmerydd . He edited the works of Tafolog ( Richard Davies , 1830 - 1904 , q.v.) , wrote the biography of Joseph Thomas of Carno (q.v.) , a short ‘Life’ of Dafydd Dafis of Cywarch ( 1794 - 1861 , a highly original preacher ), a number of small religious books, and a certain amount of verse. He d. 10 Jan. 1919 , aged 77.
