DAVIES , JOHN IDRIS ( Ioan Idris ; 1821 - 1889 ), Welsh-American poet ;

b. at Bala, Mer. , son of John Davies , bookbinder and stationer , he attended school at Dolgelley and was afterwards apprenticed to his uncle, Morris Davies ( Meurig Ebrill , 1780 - 1861 , q.v. ), carpenter , who, together with John Jones ( Idris Fychan , 1825 - 1887 , q.v.) , taught him the Welsh bardic rules. At the age of 21 he emigrated to Utica , N.Y. , where he became an elder in the Welsh Calvinistic Methodist church and m. He removed to Cambria , Wisconsin , and afterwards ( 1868 ) to Judson , Minnesota , where he d. 13 Jan. 1889 . Ioan Idris was considered a good poet , and many of his compositions were published in Welsh-American newspapers and journals; others remain in manuscript.
