DAVIES , DAVID LLOYD ( Dewi Glan Peryddon ); d. 1881 ; poet, singer, etc. , in Wales and U.S.A. ;

b. at Llwyn Einion , near Bala , brother to John Davies ( Einion Ddu ), he became prominent as an eisteddfodic entertainer and baritone singer both in Wales and in the U.S.A . A product of ‘ Cymdeithas Lenyddol Meirion ,’ he won several prizes at local and other eisteddfodau in Wales (and afterwards in America ), including the national eisteddfod of 1865 ; he won the chair at Bethesda, Caerns. , 1867 , for an awdl on ‘ Tywyllwch ’ (Darkness). Some englynion composed when he was 16 were published in Yr Amserau over the pseudonym of Dewi Einion . He was also a skilled writer of satirical and humorous verse , and contributed much material of that nature to Y Wasg Americanaidd ; he was the editor of the ‘ Lloffion Difyrus ’ feature in that newspaper, and in ‘ Y Cwpwrdd Cornel ’ column of the same paper he gave vivid descriptions of some Merioneth ‘characters’ whom he had known when he lived in Wales , and of life in the Bala district, including an account of some contemporary minor poets in Bala and district. In the 50s and 60s of the 19th cent. he conducted choirs in the Llwyn Einion , Llanfachreth , Rhyd-y-main , and Towyn districts of Merioneth ; he also composed some music . After he had emigrated to the U.S.A. , his novel, ‘ Ceinwen Morgan neu y Rian Dwylliedig ’ (with its background in Cwm Hirnant near his birthplace), was published serially in Y Drych ( Utica ) in 1870 ; he also won prizes for poems at eisteddfodau held in Kansas ( 1870 ), Hyde Park, Pa. , Arvonia ( 1872 ), Utica ( 1875 ), and Youngstown ( 1880 ). He d., penniless, 23 Jan. 1881 , at Oak Hill farm , Waterville , and was buried in the Ottawa cemetery , near Donsman , Wisconsin .
