DAVIES , OLIVER ( fl. c. 1820 ), harpist ;

b. at Montgomery . He was the principal harpist at the Welshpool eisteddfod in 1824 and in the Cymmrodorion eisteddfod in London , 6 May 1829 , when his skill on the pedal harp caused a sensation. He also appeared at the eisteddfod held in London in 1831 . In Y Cymmrodor , i, Bardd Alaw ( John Parry , 1776 - 1851 , q.v.) , writing on the ‘ Cambrian Pedal Harp ,’ refers to him as follows: ‘This harp will be introduced at the anniversary meeting of the Royal Cambrian Institution, on the 22 May next (1822), and played by a young musician of the name of Davies, who promises to become a first rate performer.’
