DAVIES , STEPHEN ( 1790 - 1858 ), poet ,

of Dyserth , also known as ‘ Stephan ’; b. at Prestatyn, Flints. , 8 Nov. 1790 . His parents moved to Dyserth while he was still young. In 1822 he m. Catherine Price , of Moelfra , near Abergele ; she d. in 1835 , and his elegy on her death is a pathetic and moving composition. His poetry, much of which was published in Welsh magazines, is of a high standard, and he was a successful eisteddfod competitor . Among his best-known compositions are ‘ Hiraeth ar ol mabolaeth ,’ awarded the prize at the Liverpool Gordovic eisteddfod , 1840 , and ‘ Ymddiddan rhwng y bardd ac Amser .’ He d. 6 April 1858 , and was buried at Galltmelyd ( Meliden ), near Prestatyn .
