DAVIES , THOMAS ( 1837 - 1892 ), mineralogist ;

b. at S. Pancras , London , 29 Dec. 1837 , son of William Davies the palaeontologist ( 1814 - 1891 ) (q.v.) . After spending some years at sea , he became an assistant in the mineral department of the British Museum in 1858 ; under Story-Maskelyne (see D.N.B. ) he became an experienced mineralogist and was a pioneer in the use of the microscope in the study of rocks . Like his father he was more interested in his official duties than in publishing the results of his own work, but made a few contributions to the Quarterly Jnl. of the Geological Society , the Geological Magazine , and the Mineralogical Magazine , the last-named of which he edited for several years. He d. 21 Dec. 1892 .
