EVANS , DAVID ( 1744 - 1821 ), Baptist minister .

B. near Aberporth, Cards. , son of David Evans , fisherman . He worked on several farms between 1754 and 1774 . He seldom went to a religious service until he began to attend Hawen Congregational chapel in 1767 . He refused to join either the Congregationalists or the Calvinistic Methodists but was baptized at Cilfowyr , 1770 , when he was chief manservant at Dol-goch , Troed-yr-aur ; soon afterwards he was persuaded to preach . He m. in 1774 and took a smallholding near Troed-yr-aur . He and John Richards (d. 1808 ) were ordained at Newcastle Emlyn , 1778 . On behalf of the Welsh Baptist mission he visited North Wales thirteen times. From 1787 until 1817 he looked after Maes-y-berllan (near Brecon ) and its branches; he also started causes at Crickadarn and Brecon . Two of his sons, JOHN EVANS and David D. Evans , Pont-rhyd-yr-ynn ( 1787 - 1858 ) , became ministers . He d. 24 Oct. 1821 .
