EVANS , HUGH ( 1790 - 1853 ), veterinary surgeon and musician ;

b. in 1790 , son of Evan and Gwen Evans , Pencraig Fawr , Betws Gwerfyl Goch, Mer. He was a good musician and a skilled player on the ‘cello ; he also was the precentor at Betws Gwerfyl Goch church . In 1837 was formed ‘ Cymdeithas Gantorawl Cerrig-y-drudion ’ under the auspices of which Evans published Holwyddoreg ar Egwyddorion Peroriaeth , in two-shilling parts, for use at the quarterly meetings of this music society; this work was the means of disseminating knowledge of music over a large part of the country. He d. 20 Jan. 1853 at Pen-yr-allt , Llangwm, Denbs. ; he was buried in Betws Gwerfyl Goch churchyard.
