Born 12 July 1833 at Ysgeifiog, Flintshire, son of John Evans (Ioan Tachwedd,). He was educated at the local National school and later (because of a disagreement about learning the catechism) at the British school, Lixwm. He became the schoolmaster at Ruthin workhouse in 1853 and was admitted to the ministry in 1860. He was appointed to the Bangor circuit in order to assist Samuel Davies (1818 - 1891) in the bookroom. Thereafter he worked in Birkenhead (Liverpool circuit) (1863), London (1866), Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant (1869), Rhyl (1872), Liverpool (1875), Caernarvon (1878), Dolgelley (1881), Manchester (1882), and Llanrwst (1885). He married Maria, daughter of Issachar Roberts of Liverpool, formerly of Mold (1864). He published essays in Y Geninen on taste and criticism, 1883; the democracy of the eisteddfod, 1884; Eben Fardd as a descriptive poet, 1885-6. He had two essays in Y Drysorfa, 1878-82, while his articles in Yr Eurgrawn would fill a substantial volume. He published a volume of sermons by Samuel Davies I (1788 - 1854), 1864; Pryddest Goffa i Thomas Aubrey, 1869; and a volume of works by Rowland Hughes (1811 - 1861) with a biographical lecture. His Cofiant includes twenty-one sermons preached by him as well as his lecture on Job. He originated the idea of his denomination's 'Provincial Lecture.' His own lecture in that series was entitled 'Cristionogaeth a Deddf Derbyniad Crefydd.' He delivered a great many lectures on other subjects. He was one of the chief promoters of the temperance movement and the school boards. He died 24 June 1886. His brother (and biographer), William Hugh Evans, is separately noticed.
