EVANS , JOHN HUGH ( Cynfaen ; 1833 - 1886 ), Wesleyan Minister .

Born 12 July 1833 at Ysgeifiog, Flints. , son of John Evans ( Ioan Tachwedd ,) . He was educated at the local National school and later (because of a disagreement about learning the catechism) at the British school , Lixwm . He became the schoolmaster at Ruthin workhouse in 1853 and was admitted to the ministry in 1860 . He was appointed to the Bangor circuit in order to assist Samuel Davies ( 1818 - 1891 ) in the bookroom. Thereafter he worked in Birkenhead ( Liverpool circuit ) ( 1863 ), London ( 1866 ), Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant ( 1869 ), Rhyl ( 1872 ), Liverpool ( 1875 ), Caernarvon ( 1878 ), Dolgelley ( 1881 ), Manchester ( 1882 ), and Llanrwst ( 1885 ). He m. Maria , daughter of Issachar Roberts of Liverpool , formerly of Mold ( 1864 ). He published essays in Y Geninen on taste and criticism, 1883 ; the democracy of the eisteddfod, 1884 ; Eben Fardd as a descriptive poet , 1885-6 . He had two essays in Y Drysorfa , 1878-82 , while his articles in Yr Eurgrawn would fill a substantial volume. He published a volume of sermons by Samuel Davies I ( 1788 - 1854 ) , 1864 ; Pryddest Goffa i Thomas Aubrey , 1869 ; and a volume of works by Rowland Hughes ( 1811 - 1861 ) with a biographical lecture. His Cofiant includes twenty-one sermons preached by him as well as his lecture on Job . He originated the idea of his denomination's ‘ Provincial Lecture .’ His own lecture in that series was entitled ‘ Cristionogaeth a Deddf Derbyniad Crefydd .’ He delivered a great many lectures on other subjects. He was one of the chief promoters of the temperance movement and the school boards . He d. 24 June 1886 . His brother (and biographer ), William Hugh Evans , is separately noticed.
