EVANS , OWEN ( 1808 - 1865 ), Unitarian minister and schoolmaster ;

b. 25 April 1808 at Burlip , Llandysul, Cards. He was educated at Davis of Castellhywel 's school until he went to Carmarthen Academy ( 1826-30 ). After that, he returned to Burlip , preaching occasionally at Pant-y-defaid and opening a school at Llandysul and later at ‘ The College ,’ Maesymeillion ( 1830-4 ). He was for twelve months a schoolmaster at Evesham and Birmingham . In 1836 he accepted a call to Blaen-gwrach and in 1837 moved to Cefncoedycymer , where he remained for twenty-eight years, as minister of the Old Meeting House , and schoolmaster . His school was attended by a large number of pupils of all denominations. He was learned in the ancient languages and was, for years, examiner in Hebrew at Carmarthen College . He was twice m. — (1) to Jennet , daughter of David Davis of Neath , and (2) to Margaret Harries of Penderyn , a descendant of Siôn Llewelyn (q.v.) , one of the founders of the Old Meeting House . Apart from articles for the Ymofynydd he published sermons on Temporal Judgments , 1846 , and a translation of a sermon preached by the Rabbi Raphael of Birmingham on the Unity of God , 1846 , He d. 9 Jan. 1865 and was buried in the Old Meeting House cemetery at Cefn Coed .
