EVANS , SAMUEL ( 1777 - 1833 ), Independent minister ;

b. at Clydach (near Abergavenny ) in June 1777 . At eighteen (while living at Long-town, Herefords. ), he began preaching ; he afterwards kept school at Cwm-dŵr between Trecastle and Llandovery , and preached at Pentre-tŷ-gwyn and neighbouring chapels. In 1810 he was ordained pastor of Zoar , Merthyr Tydfil , and remained there till his death, 27 June 1833 . He was a man of great ability; he published ( 1815 ) a notable sermon on the Doctrine of the Trinity , and wrote an account of the history of Zoar (not published till 1869 ); he was also a hymn-writer . Over and above his ministerial work, he was much in demand as a medical man , and is said to have been very much more highly remunerated in that capacity than he was as a minister .
