EVANS , EVAN WILLIAM ( 1827? - 1874 ), mathematician .

B. in Llangyfelach , 6 Jan. 1827 (or 1828 ), s. of William and Catherine (née Howell ) Evans . He is sometimes known as Evander William Evans . He removed with his parents in 1833 to Bradford Co., Penn. , U.S.A. He graduated at Yale in 1851 , and was tutor there, 1855-7 . He studied theology in New Haven after graduating, and was principal of Delaware Institute , Franklin , New York , for a year. From 1857 to 1864 he was professor of natural philosophy and astronomy at Marietta College , Ohio. He left Marietta College in 1864 on account of his health and in order to improve his circumstances. He afterwards seems to have been a mining engineer , and was very successful in the oil industry in West Virginia . On the foundation of Cornell University , he became its first professor of mathematics , 1868-72 .

He was greatly interested in Welsh studies, contributed papers on Welsh matters to the American Philological Society , and left behind him an unfinished work on the history of Wales . He d. 22 May 1874 at Ithaca, N.Y.
