GRIFFITHS , GRIFFITH ( 1799 - 1845 ), Anglican missionary ;

christened 24 Dec. 1799 , son of Griffith and Elizabeth Griffiths , Ty'n–nant , Llanfihangel-genau'r-glyn, Cards. He was educated locally and under John Williams ( 1792 - 1858 ) at Lampeter grammar school . Ordained deacon , he sailed for Jamaica in 1825 as missionary of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel ; he was priested in Jamaica by bishop Lipscombe , and appointed to the Marchioneal Bay area; he was translated to Portland in 1833 and later to Trelawney ; he ministered successfully amongst the negroes during the turbulent period of the emancipation of the slaves. He d. 8 Dec. 1845 .
