GRIFFITHS , THOMAS (JEREMY) ( Tau Gimel , 1797? - 1871 ), Unitarian minister and schoolmaster ;

b. at Llechryd, Cards. , where his father, Griffith Griffiths ( 1762 - 1818 ) (q.v.) , was minister . He was educated at home, at Davis of Castellhywel's school , and at Carmarthen Academy ( 1818-22 ). In 1822 he was appointed minister of Cribin and Ciliau Aeron where he remained until 1841 , opening schools here and there. From that year until 1846 we have no further news of him and it is said that he and his family emigrated to the U.S.A. He was preaching at Caeronnen , 1846-51 , and at Cribin and Ciliau , 1846-8 . From 1851 to 1855 he was once more on his travels, but not this time to the U.S.A. He returned to his old neighbourhood and preached at Cribin from 1857 to 1868 . He spent the autumn of his life at the home of his friend the Rev. David Evans of Maesymeillion . He d. 19 Jan. 1871 and was buried in Alltyblaca cemetery. He published a memoir of David Davis of Castellhywel , 1828 ; Casgliad o Hymnau , a collection of hymns, twenty-nine of which had been written by himself, 1830 ; a periodical (one number), Yr Hanesydd , 1839 ; and a number of elegies and poems under the pseudonym Tau Gimel . He was a frequent contributor to Seren Gomer , Lleuad yr Oes , and the Carmarthen Journal .
