GRIFFITH , WILLIAM ( Gwilym Caledffrwd , 1832 - 1913 ), quarryman and musician ;

b. at Penisa'r allt , Tre-garth , Llandygai, Caerns. He received instruction in music from John Morgan , Pen-y-groes , Tre-garth ; he also studied the text-books of Mills and Alawydd . In 1860 he emigrated to the U.S.A. , settling in Middle Granville . He published Y Canigydd Cymreig in 1866 and, in 1879 , Graded Anthems , the latter including two anthems composed by himself; in 1888 he published another anthem — ‘ I will extol Thee .’ He acted as musical adjudicator , conducted mixed choirs at Middle Granville and Poultney for many years, and was precentor in Wesleyan and Baptist chapels. He d. 4 Dec. 1913 and was buried in the town cemetery at Middle Granville .
