GRUFFUDD HAFREN ( fl. c. 1600 ), a poet

(presumably of Montgomeryshire ) of whose work many examples remain in manuscripts. These include poems to various members of the families of Gogerddan ( Llanst. MS. 118 (376) ), Llyweni ( N.L.W. MSS. 6494 (29, 44), 6495 (64), 6496 (281b) apparently in the poet 's own handwriting), and Henllys in Pembs. ( Llanst. MS. 133 (773) ). He wrote two cywyddau in praise of Dr. John Davies of Mallwyd ( N.L.W. MS. 5269 (393b, 405) ), and elegies to the two poets , Siôn Phylip ( N.L.W. MS. 799 (40) ) and Thomas Penllyn ( Cwrtmawr 11 (189) ). A bardic controversy or ymryson , took place — Rhisiart Phylip and Gruffudd Hafren against Siôn Phylip and Ieuan Tew ( Llanst. MS. 133 (497-500) ); and a shorter one occurred between Roger Cyffin and Gruffudd ( Cwrtmawr MS. 206 (101) ). No details have been found regarding his life.
