HAWYS (HAWISE) GADARN (‘the Hardy’) (1291-ante 1353), daughter of Owen de la Pole by Joanna Corbet, and granddaughter of Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn (q.v.). As heiress of her only brother, Gruffydd, who d. in 1309, she became a ward of the Crown, being given in marriage, together with the barony of Powys, to John Cherleton or Charlton (q.v.) in the same year. She had two sons — John, second lord Charlton of Powys, and Owen who d. without issue. Hawise was probably buried at the house of the Grey Friars, Shrewsbury.
