HUET, THOMAS (d. 1591), Biblical translator.
He entered Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, in 1544, but he is unlikely to have been the Huet who graduated B.A. in 1562, though he is reputed to have been a D.D. He was admitted to a number of benefices; the mastership of Holy Trinity College, Ponte-fract, 9 May 1556; the rectories of Cefnllys and Llanbadarn-ym-Maelienydd, Rads., 29 Nov. 1559; the prebend of Llanbadarn Trefeglwys, Cards., 21 April 1560; the rectory of Disserth, 27 April 1560; the precentorship of S. Davids, and (30 April 1561) a canonry there; in 1565, the prebend of Ystrad, Cards., and the prebend of Llandegla, Rads. He was unsuccessfully recommended for the bishopric of Bangor by Richard Davies (q.v.) and archbishop Parker in Jan. 1566.
He subscribed to the Thirty-nine Articles in 1562. He translated Revelations for the Welsh New Testament of 1567. In 1571 he dismissed the cathedral sexton for concealing papist books, and publicly burned them. He and his relatives benefited considerably from leases of church lands and grants of advowsons. He d. 19 Aug. 1591 [at Tŷ Mawr, Llysdinam, and was buried in the chancel of Llanafan-fawr church, Brecknock].
