HUGHES , CHARLES ( 1823 - 1886 ), publisher ;

b. 3 March 1823 , the son of Richard Hughes ( 1794 - 1871 ) (q.v.) , Wrexham and his wife, Anne . He was educated at Fairfield (Moravian) and Bridgnorth grammar schools . He served four years as publisher's apprentice with Simpkin & Marshall , London ( 1844-8 ), and returned to his father's publishing house in Church Street , Wrexham . He attended the Frankfurt-on-Main Peace Conference in 1848 . He was borough and county magistrate , moderator of his presbytery , president of the Wrexham Liberal association , and prominent in several other associations and companies. He m. Catherine Lewis ( 1830 - 1867 ) [see Lewis , Sir J. H. ], of Penucha , Caerwys . His fine business acumen enabled him to enlarge the publishing business of Hughes & Son which his father had founded in 1820 . He d. at his home, Brynhyfryd , Wrexham , 24 March 1886 .
