HUGHES , WILLIAM JOHN ( 1833 - 1879 ), musician and schoolmaster ;

b. Dec. 1833 in a farmhouse called Penuwch-Roe , near S. Asaph . He received a good education. He taught in a grammar school at Enniskillen , Ireland , for some years and afterwards at Harleston , Norfolk , where also he was organist at the parish church . About the year 1855 he went to Llanrwst to teach at the grammar school . After some years there he moved to Rhyl where he started a grammar school and where he spent the remainder of his life. Many anthems and hymn-tunes by him were published in such collections as Y Ceinion ( Hafrenydd ), Caniadau y Cysegr a'r Teulu ( Gee , Denbigh ), Llyfr Tonau ac Emynau ( Stephen and Jones ), Udgorn Seion ( Dewi Wyllt ), and Aberth Moliant ( J. Ambrose Lloyd ). He arranged some old anthems for publication in Y Cerddor Cymreig , edited St. Asaph Tune Book , and assisted John Roberts of Henllan with his collection of hymn-tunes called In Memoriam . He d. June 1879 at Rhyl .
