HUGHES, JOHN (Glanystwyth; 1842 - 1902), Wesleyan minister

Born 15 April 1842 at Cwmagwr Isaf, near Cnwch Coch, Cardiganshire. After a little elementary education at Llanfihangel y Creuddyn school he became a farm labourer (1854), a lead worker, a farm labourer once again, and then a quarryman at Blaenau Ffestiniog (1863), where he began to preach. In 1865 he went to the 'Jasper House' academy at Aberystwyth and two years later was received into the ministry. He laboured at Treherbert (1867), Mountain Ash (1868), Cardiff (1869), Tre'r Ddôl (Aberystwyth circuit) (1872), Trefeglwys (Llanidloes circuit) (1873), Machynlleth (1876), Coedpoeth (1878), Caernarvon (1881), Llanrhaeadr Mochnant (1884), London (1886), Rhyl (1889), Manchester (1891), and Liverpool (Mount Zion) (1894). He was superintendent of the (Welsh) Wesleyan Bookroom in 1897. He died 24 February 1902.

He married Emily, daughter of the Rev. Henry Wilcox; Henry Maldwyn Hughes was their son. He edited Y Winllan, 1874-7; Y Gwyliedydd, 1890-2; and Yr Eurgrawn, 1897-1902. He also edited the new hymn book, 1900. He was the author of Arwrgerdd John Penri, Oesau Boreu y Byd, Bywyd Crist, Delw y Nefol (sermons), Esponiad ar y Colosiaid, and Cofiant Isaac Jones. He was the initiator of the movement to establish a denominational newspaper, Y Gwyliedydd, 1877, and of the movements to get a Welsh Wesleyan Assembly, 1899, and to subdivide the North Wales Province, 1902. His was the second best pryddest at the national eisteddfod held at Aberystwyth while he was still studying at 'Jasper House,' the second best at the London national eisteddfod, 1887 the best, according to David Watkin Jones, Dafydd Morgannwg, and the second best at the Llanelly national eisteddfod, 1895. He adjudicated on the pryddest at the Liverpool eisteddfod, 1900. He was chairman of the general committee of the London eisteddfod, 1887. Several of his hymns are well known. In 1901 he was elected president of the Assembly, but died before he could take office.
