Born 6 March 1811 at Bala and brought up at Dolgelley. After a little elementary education he was apprenticed to a tailor but in 1830 was appointed a paid preacher at Merthyr Tydfil. In due course he was ordained and served as a minister in the following circuits: Caernarvon (1832), Beaumaris (1834), Liverpool (1836), Holywell (1838), Llanasa (1840), Liverpool (1843), Bangor (1846), Merthyr Tydfil (1849), Crickhowell (1852), Manchester (1854), Liverpool (1857), and Denbigh (1860). He married Elizabeth, daughter of the Rev. David Evans ' the first.' He died at Denbigh, Christmas Day 1861. In his day he was one of the outstanding preachers of Wales. He published a revised translation of John Wesley's commentary on the New Testament, a translation of a sermon by Thomas Jackson (Trefnyddiaeth Wesleyaidd) and of a book by R. Young (Cyfarchiad Caredig i rai newydd ddychwelyd, 1849). He also wrote Diffyniad Wesleyaeth, 1853, as a counterblast to the ' Wesleyan Reformers ' who were troubling the South Wales circuits. In addition, he was one of the editors of Casgliad o Hymnau, 1845.
