HUGHES , ROWLAND ( 1811 - 1861 ), Wesleyan minister ;

b. 6 March 1811 at Bala and brought up at Dolgelley . After a little elementary education he was apprenticed to a tailor but in 1830 was appointed a paid preacher at Merthyr Tydfil . In due course he was ordained and served as a minister in the following circuits: Caernarvon ( 1832 ), Beaumaris ( 1834 ), Liverpool ( 1836 ), Holywell ( 1838 ), Llanasa ( 1840 ), Liverpool ( 1843 ), Bangor ( 1846 ), Merthyr Tydfil ( 1849 ), Crickhowell ( 1852 ), Manchester ( 1854 ), Liverpool ( 1857 ), and Denbigh ( 1860 ). He m. Elizabeth , daughter of the Rev. David Evans ‘ the first .’ He d. at Denbigh , Christmas Day 1861 . In his day he was one of the outstanding preachers of Wales . He published a revised translation of John Wesley 's commentary on the New Testament , a translation of a sermon by Thomas Jackson ( Trefnyddiaeth Wesleyaidd ) and of a book by R. Young ( Cyfarchiad Caredig i rai newydd ddychwelyd , 1849 ). He also wrote Diffyniad Wesleyaeth , 1853 , as a counterblast to the ‘ Wesleyan Reformers ’ who were troubling the South Wales circuits. In addition, he was one of the editors of Casgliad o Hymnau , 1845 .
