HUGHES , THOMAS ( 1814 - 1884 ), Wesleyan minister ;

b. at Llangynog, Mont. , 1814 , son of Thomas Hughes , who was subsequently a lay preacher in the Llangollen circuit , and nephew of the Rev. Evan Hughes . He joined the ministry and worked in the Welsh circuits of Cardigan ( 1842 ) and Carmarthen ( 1844 ) and in various English circuits in England from 1846 to 1871 . He d. 31 Jan. 1884 at Moreton . He published a number of books (e.g. The Great Barrier ; Prayer and the Divine Order ; The Human Will ) and tracts in English . His attitude with regard to the conditions which should be attached to church membership (see his Condition of Membership and A Defence and Plea ) roused considerable controversy in the connexion and brought him under the displeasure of the Conference.
