HUMPHREYS , ROBERT (or RHOBERT RHAGAT ) ( fl. c. 1720 ), poet ,

and native (apparently) of Rhagat , near Corwen, Mer. Some of his work is preserved in manuscripts, and this includes ‘begging poems’ written to Thomas Carter of Kinmel and Thomas Holland of Teirdan , and various englynion which include praises to John Rhydderch (q.v.) , the Shrewsbury printer , two upon the grave of Huw Morys , the poet , a number satirizing Newborough in Anglesey ; these last drew replies by Evan Jones , a former parson of the place. The following manuscripts contain examples of his poetry: Cwrtmawr MSS. 206, 463 ; N.L.W. MSS. 276, 436, 783, 1238, 1244, 1579, 1580, 1666, 4697, 11993, 12449 . One stanza, in free metre, is printed in Llawysgrif Richard Morris o Gerddi (ed. T. H. Parry-Williams , 1931 , 201).
