HUW LLŶN (fl. c. 1552-1594), poet

A native of Llŷn, who graduated in the third bardic grade at the Caerwys eisteddfod of 1568 - Peniarth MS 132 (59). It appears that he may have been a brother of Wiliam Llŷn (NLW MS 1244D (28), NLW MS 1580B (308), Bulletin of the Board of Celtic Studies, ix, 112, etc.). According to Myrddin Fardd, J. E. Griffith, and J. C. Morrice, he was the squire Huw ap Rhisiart ap Dafydd of Cefn Llanfair, but there is no proof that they were the same person.

Some of Huw Llŷn's poetry remains, and this includes poems to Walter Devereux (earl of Essex), Henry Rowland (bishop of Bangor), Simon Thelwall of Plas y Ward, and to the South Walians Thomas Vaughan (Pembrey), Gruffudd Dwnn (Ystrad Merthyr), William and George Owen (Henllys), and John Lloyd (Cilgwyn). A bardic controversy occurred between him and Siôn Mawddwy, and another between him and Wiliam Cynwal and four other poets, Wiliam Llŷn, Ieuan Tew, Siôn Phylip and Hywel Ceiriog.

An example of his handwriting is found in Llanstephan MS 40 (149-156).
