HYWEL GETHIN (‘ Hywel Gethin of Celynnog ’ according to the manuscripts) ( fl. c. 1485 ), poet ;

a native, it is said, of Clynnog-fawr, Caerns. No details concerning his life remain, but the dates given him, by Owen Jones , Gweirydd ap Rhys , Myrddin Fardd , and Wiliam Owen (viz. 1570-1600 ) are obviously too late, because a cywydd written by him in praise of the four sons of Rhys ap Hywel ap Madog of Llanystumdwy remains in manuscript; these four persons lived at the end of the 15th cent , and beginning of the 16th cent. ( J. E. Griffith , Pedigrees , 129, 170). It is said that he was a genealogist , but no example of such work by him has yet been discovered, nor any further examples of his poetry.
