ISAAC, EVAN (1865-1938), Wesleyan minister;
b. 18 June 1865 at Taliesin, Cards. At the age of ten, after a little education at the village school, he began to work in the local lead-mine. Then he went to the South Wales collieries where he worked for some years. He began to preach while he was still a miner at Mountain Ash, was accepted for the ministry, and went to Handsworth College, Birmingham (1888-91). Almost all his work as a minister was done in South Wales — Bryn Mawr (1891); Merthyr Tydfil (1894); Treorchy (1895); S. Davids (1896); Machynlleth (1897); Merthyr Tydfil (1900); Machynlleth (1903); Llanidloes (1904); Machynlleth (1907); Llanidloes (1910); Treorchy (1913); Merthyr Tydfil (1916); Aberystwyth (1919); Ferndale (1925); Llanidloes (1926). He retired in 1932 and lived for a short time at Aberystwyth from which place he moved to Taliesin. He d., a bachelor, 16 Dec. 1938.
His most notable service was rendered as a provincial official. After some time spent as secretary of the home mission of his province he was elected secretary of the chapels, a post which he retained for ten years. He was then elected chairman of the province (1917), a post he held until his retirement fifteen years later. He was elected president of the Wesleyan assembly (1917) and, in this capacity, went as a delegate to the conferences of the Ecumenical Methodists held at Toronto. He was elected a member of the Legal Hundred of his denomination (1917).
He published Prif Emynwyr Cymru, Yr Hen Gyrnol, Coelion Cymru, Humphrey Jones a Diwygiad ‘59, and ‘Daniel Owen,’ a series of twelve articles in the Eurgrawn, 1919.
