After emigrating to America, Daniel Jones became a convert to Mormonism through conveying believers on a river boat of which he was in charge. Jones was with the prophet Joseph Smith on the night of 26 June 1844, when he was assassinated. Next year Jones came to Wales as a missionary. He made Merthyr Tydfil his centre, publishing there a monthly periodical, Prophwyd y Jubili . He sailed from Liverpool on 26 February 1849, with 249 Welsh converts, and shepherded them across the plains to Salt Lake City in twenty-five covered wagons. In August 1852, he returned on a second mission, and in 1856 took another 703 Welsh saints to Salt Lake City. The remainder of his life he spent as skipper of a boat on the Great Salt Lake. He died on 3 January 1861, and was survived by three wives and six children.
