JONES , JOHN EVANS ( 1839 - 1893 ), journalist ;

b. at Bagillt, Flints. , 1839 . After apprenticeship to P.M. Evans (q.v.) , printer and publisher , Holywell , he entered the service of David Roberts , timber merchant , Liverpool , in 1867 . While at Liverpool he began to preach and became a student at the Bala C.M. College with a view to entering the Calvinistic Methodist ministry. He did not proceed to ordination, decided to become a journalist , and in 1872 was appointed editor of The Caernarvon and Denbigh Herald at Caernarvon ; after the death of John James Hughes ( Alfardd ) (q.v.) , editor of Yr Herald Cymraeg , in 1875 , he was appointed his successor, but resigned in 1879 , confining himself to the English paper. He also edited for a while a monthly, Y Darlunydd , issued from the same office, for which he wrote over the pen-name ‘ Y Cwilsyn Gwyn .’ He was the author of a series of sketches for children , under the general heading ‘ Huw Huws y Go a Ninnau ,’ which ran in Trysorfa y Plant from Feb. 1862 . He had a considerable reputation as an editor , but he was little known personally to his contemporaries. He d. in June 1893 and was buried in Llanbeblig churchyard , Caernarvon .
