JONES , EVAN (TALFRYN) ( 1857 - 1935 ), Baptist minister ;

b. 26 May 1857 at Moel-y-crio , Halkin, Flints. , the eleventh of the twelve children of Evan and Mary Jones . His parents were Calvinistic Methodists , but the son joined the Baptist church of Ainon , Pont-y-gof , was baptized there 24 March 1872 , and began preaching in 1878 . He went to a school at Llangollen in 1879 , and to the Baptist college there in 1880 , and afterwards became minister at Pont-y-gof ( 1881 ), Penrhyn-coch ( 1882 ), Blaen-y-waun ( March 1883 ), and Llwyn-y-pia ( May 1892 ). On 23 Dec. 1900 he began his ministry at Zion , Llanelly , and spent the rest of his days there. He was incapacitated from Aug. 1918 till March 1923 , but then resumed his work, retiring finally in Dec. 1929 ; he d. 6 July 1935 . By common consent he was one of the greatest Welsh preachers of his day. Further, he took a keen interest in the history of his denomination , and Traf. Cymd. Hanes Bed. contains three valuable papers by him — in 1908-9 on Titus Lewis , in 1913-14 on the Cilfowyr church , and in 1932 on the Baptist historian David Jones of Carmarthen .
