JONES , RHYS GWESYN ( 1826 - 1901 ), Congregational minister in Wales and the U.S.A., and author ;

b. 4 May 1826 in Pen-y-wern , Abergwesyn , Brecknock . He became a member of Moriah Congregational church in 1840 and began to preach there in 1844 . He lived in Ffrwd-y-Fâl , near Llandilo , and at Llanover , before going to the Congregational College at Brecon in 1847 . In 1851 he started to minister at Rhayader , removing to Bridgend in 1857 , and later ( 1859 ) to Merthyr Tydfil . During these years he wrote articles for Y Beirniad , Y Diwygiwr , etc. In May 1867 he emigrated to the U.S.A. to take charge of two churches in Utica , New York State ; later he ministered in Petaluma in California ( 1879 ), and at New York Mills ( 1883 ). His works include Y Byd cyn Adda ( 1858 , etc.), Esboniwr y Datguddiad ( Utica , 1867 ), Caru, Priodi, a Byw ( New York , 1868 ) together with an English version entitled Courting, Marrying, and Living , of which several editions appeared, Yr Eglwys Bur ( 1860 ), Y Teulu Dedwydd ( Merthyr Tydfil , 1867 , etc.), Llithiau ar Epistol Iago ( Utica , 1874 ); he also edited Ellis Wynne 's Gweledigaethau y Bardd Cwsc in 1867 . He was one of the founders of ‘ Sefydliad Cymreig y Bala ’ in Powys Riley County , Kansas . He d. 5 Sept. 1901 .
