JONES, HUGH (Erfyl ; 1789-1858), b. [at Caerbachau] Llanerfyl, Mont., son of Evan and Elizabeth Jones — on his father's side he was nephew of Hugh Jones (1749-1825) (q.v.) of Maesglasau; [his maternal grandfather was Evan Jones (‘Telynor Waun Oer’), a harpist of some repute]. As he was a cripple, he was educated with a view to becoming a schoolmaster; he wrote well, and won a prize at the Beaumaris eisteddfod of 1832 for a treatise on Welsh syntax. [N.L.W. MS. 1805 contains letters, and MS. 1899 poetry, by him. From c. 1821 at latest] he was overseer of Welsh printing at Chester, for Edward (1798-1854) (q.v.) and John (1775-1846) (q.v.) Parry. He was editor of Y Gwladgarwr, 1835-40, and was one of the translators of the Beibl Darluniadol (1844-7) edited by Ieuan Glan Geirionydd (q.v.). He d. 25 May 1858, aged 69, and was buried at Llanerfyl.
