Born 20 July 1802 at Pantlluest, Llanarth, Cardiganshire. He was educated at David Davis of Castellhywel's school and at Carmarthen Academy (1825-1827). In 1831 he opened, in conjunction with the Rev. Rees Davies, a school at Cribin, and meantime preached occasionally at Pantydefaid. In February 1833 he was appointed minister of the Old Meeting House, Aberdare, and opened a grammar school in Heol-y-felin. He was a good linguist, had a sound knowledge of Greek, Latin, and Welsh, and his school was celebrated for two generations. He married Anne Rees of Gilgellisaf; Rees Jenkin Jones was their son. He was probably the first person to conceive of a Welsh Unitarian denominational magazine, and that as early as 1835. He was a disciple of Priestley's and entirely opposed to war. He published Llythyr ar y Drindod, 1834; Llyfr Ysgol Sul, 1839; Edifeirwch Gwely Angeu, 1836; Galwad ar Ieuenctyd i droi at Dduw, 1840; Pechod yn erbyn yr Ysbryd Glan, 1846; (ed.) Crwth Dyffryn Clettwr (Amnon), 1848; Traethawd y Sabbathau, 1859; Chwech o Bregethau, 1865; and Casgliad o Salmau a Hymnau, 1857. He died 19 December 1863.

Rees Jones, (1797 - 1844) was his brother.
