JONES , ROBERT ( 1810 - 1879 ), cleric and author ;

b. 6 Jan. 1810 , eldest son of Robert Jones of Llanfyllin, Mont. He was educated at Oswestry Grammar School , matriculated from Jesus College , Oxford , 12 Dec. 1834 , and took his B.A. in 1837 . He was ordained deacon by bishop Carey of S. Asaph , 1 July 1837 , and licensed to the curacy of Northop, Flints. He received priest 's orders on 5 May 1838 , and served as curate of Barmouth from 1840 to 1842 . In 1842 he was appointed vicar of All Saints , Rotherhithe , London , where he remained till his death on 28 March 1879 . He was buried in All Saints churchyard .

While at Barmouth he published a collection of Welsh psalms and hymns , and in 1864 he produced a reprint of Dr. John Davies , Flores Poetarum Britannicorum . In 1876 he published the Poetical Works of Goronwy Owen: with his Life and Correspondence (in two volumes), and in 1877 The Works of Iolo Goch, with a sketch of his life , but this production was cut short by his death. He was an active member of the Society of Cymmrodorion , and in 1876 he was appointed editor of Y Cymmrodor . He gave considerable support to the national eisteddfod , and, in its early years, to the University College of Wales , Aberystwyth , and was a prominent and respected member of the London-Welsh community .
