JONES, SAMUEL (fl. 1715-1764), Congregational minister and tutor.;
b. probably in the parish of Llanedy, Carms. (but Llangyfelach, Glam., has also been suggested). He was at the Carmarthen Academy, under William Evans, c. 1715, and it is thought that he looked after some church at the same time. He was minister of Capel Seion, Llanddarog, Carms., 1720-52, and of Tirdoncyn, Llangyfelach, Glam., 1720-59. He resided at Pen-tŵyn, Llannon, Carms., and kept a school there for twenty-two years; among his distinguished pupils were Richard Price, Owen Rees, Thomas Morgan (1720-1799) (qq.v.), and Noah Jones (Walsall). He moved to Morriston c. 1766; there also he opened a school, with his son as a tutor. He was suspected by some of being an Arian but his sermons testify to his evangelical spirit and opinion. The date of his death is unknown; he was alive in 1764, but is believed to have d. in 1767 or 1768.
