JONES , Sir HENRY STUART ( 1867 - 1939 ), classical scholar and lexicographer ;

b. at Hunslet , Leeds , 15 May 1867 , only child of the Rev. Henry William Jones [ 1834 - 1909 ] (then curate of Hunslet ) and Margaret Lawrance , née Baker ; [his grandfather was a solicitor at Bishops Castle , and the family seems to have been Cornish — not (as is often said) Welsh ]. He was educated at Rossall school and Balliol College , Oxford (classical scholar 1886 ). A brilliant university career included the Hertford, Ireland, and Craven scholarships , the Gaisford Prize for Greek prose , and the Craven Fellowship . He was Fellow of Trinity College 1890-1906 and director of the British School at Rome 1903-5 . In 1905 he settled at Saundersfoot, Pembs. , in 1919 became Camden Professor of Ancient History and Fellow of Brasenose College , Oxford , and in 1927 was appointed principal of the University College of Wales , Aberystwyth . He then applied himself to mastering Welsh , and he was active in Welsh life, vice-chancellor of the University 1929-31 , member of the governing body of the Church in Wales , and of the councils of S. David's College , Lampeter , Trinity College , Carmarthen , and the National Library of Wales . He was knighted in 1933 , retired from the principalship in 1934 , and d. at Tenby 29 June 1939 . He m., 1894 , Ileen (daughter of the Rev. Edwyn Henry Vaughan ), who d. in 1931 , and by whom he had one son. He was a Fellow of the British Academy from 1915 and president of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies 1926-9 ; a number of its Journal was dedicated to him on his seventieth birthday in 1937 . His main work was in classical studies, in all branches of which, including Greek music, he had a wide knowledge. He was editor-in-chief of the new edition of Liddell and Scott 's Greek — English Lexicon ( 1925-40 ). His numerous publications (bibliography in Journ. Rom. Stud. , xxvii, 3-11) included an edition of Thucydides ( Oxford Classical Texts , 1898 ), The Roman Empire , 1908 , and A Companion to Roman History , 1912 .
