JONES , THOMAS ( 1848 - 1900 ), surgeon ;

b. at Derlwyn, Carms. , son of David Jones who kept school there. From Swansea Normal College he went to the Northern Hospital , Liverpool ; he graduated in London University , and was F.R.C.S. Settling down in 1873 at Manchester , he soon became consultant and operating surgeon (one of the first to set up in that capacity). In 1880 he was appointed lecturer in surgery at Owens College , and in 1890 professor of surgery in what was then the Victoria University . He became chief surgeon of the Welsh hospital (see Hughes , Alfred William ) in South Africa during the Boer War , and d. there 18 June 1900 .
