JONES , WILLIAM ( 1790 - 1855 ), Baptist Minister and writer ;

b. at Pen-y-cae-main , Llangadock, Carms. , 1 Aug. 1790 . He was employed at an early age at the Dowlais , Penydarren , and Plymouth Iron Works , and became a member at Zion Baptist church , Merthyr Tydfil , where he was induced to preach . He entered Abergavenny Academy in April, 1810 , and held the pastorates of Penuel , near Caerleon (together with the office of home missionary for Monmouthshire ) from 1813 until Jan. 1816 and of Bethany English church , Cardiff , from that date until his death, 17 May 1855 . He left a widow and four children. He kept a school during both his pastorates, but he is best remembered for his literary and historical writings . An unsigned series of essays by him on the history of the Christian Church appeared in Y Bedyddiwr , 1852 . He translated into Welsh a large portion of Dr. Gill 's Commentary on the New Testament , and at the request of the South-Eastern Baptist Association , made in 1829 , he published a history of the Welsh Baptist Association under the title Hanes Cymmanfa y Bedyddwyr , 1831 ; 2nd ed. 1889 .
