KILVERT , ROBERT FRANCIS ( 1840 - 1879 ), cleric and diarist ;

b. 3 Dec. 1840 at Hardenhuish , near Chippenham , where his father ( Robert ) was parson ; graduated from Wadham College , Oxford , in 1862 ( M.A. 1866 ). After serving as curate to his father, he became curate at Clyro (Rads.) in 1864 , remaining there till 1876 , when he became vicar of S. Harmon's (Rads.) . In 1877 , he was appointed vicar of Bredwardine (Herefs.) , where he d. 23 Sept. 1879 . Kilvert 's fame rests upon the diary which he began in Jan. 1870 and kept up till March 1879 ; parts of this ( June 1876-Dec. 1877 ) have been lost, but considerable selections of the remainder, edited by William Plomer , were published in 3 volumes in 1938-40 . Kilvert 's observations on nature and on social life in the Wye valley are of the highest interest and value.
