Born at Cwmcynwal, Llanwrda, Carmarthenshire. He was given a smattering of education in his own neighbourhood and was then apprenticed to a blacksmith. He opened his own smithy at Talley, where he remained for the rest of his life. Although it was the Baptists who first impressed upon him the importance of religion, his spiritual father was really William Lloyd of Caeo (1741 - 1808). He joined the Methodists at Llansawel and was one of the founders of the church at Esgair-nant, 1806. He came to be regarded as one of the leading Methodist elders in the county. He has won fame as the author of the hymn ' Wrth gofio'i riddfannau'n yr ardd,' which first appeared in a collection entitled Hymnau ar Amryw Destunau (Carmarthen, 1823). He died 14 September 1842, and was buried in Talley churchyard.
