LEWIS , THOMAS ( 1823 - 1900 ), Baptist minister, and historical writer ;

b. 3 Aug. 1823 in the parish of Llandeilo'r-fan , Brecknock . In 1829 the family moved to Cwmdŵr where he was baptised in 1837 . He worked in the woollen mills at Cwmdŵr and Llanwrtyd and began to preach in 1840 at Pantycelyn . He was trained for the ministry at Horeb ( Cwmdŵr ), at the school kept by Brutus (q.v.) , near Pentre-bach , at D. Williams 's ( Independent ) school at Tredwstan , and at an academy at Pontypool . He was a minister at Llanddewi Rhydderch , 1848-56 ; Llanelly , Brecknock , 1856-9 ; Jerusalem , Rhymney , 1860-3 ; Penuel , Carmarthen , 1863-74 ; Moriah , Risca , 1874-80 . He retired to Newport, Mon. He published Cofiant … Titus Lewis , Carmarthen ; Cofiant … James Richard , Pontypridd ; Ymddygiad y Feibl Gymdeithas Frytanaidd a Thramor at y Bedyddwyr ; and Esboniad y Teulu . His Hunangofiant appeared in 1903 and his ‘ Hanes Eglwysi'r Bedyddwyr ym Mynwy hyd 1890 ,’ still in manuscript, is kept in the county archives at Aber-carn . He was a frequent contributor to the periodicals , and wrote articles for the Geiriadur Bywgraffyddol ( J.T. J. ), the Geiriadur of Mathetes (q.v.) , and Y Gwyddoniadur . He d. 2 Dec. 1900 .
