LLOYD , HUGH ( 1546 - 1601 ), master of Winchester College ;

b. 1546 in the Llŷn peninsula , brother of John Lloyd , classical scholar ( 1558 - 1603 ) (q.v.) . He entered Winchester in 1560 , and went to New College , Oxford , where he was made probationary Fellow , 5 Jan. 1562 , and perpetual Fellow in 1564 — ( B.A. 1566 , B.C.L. 1570 , and D.C.L. 1588 ). He became chancellor of Rochester , 1578 , vicar of Charlbury , Oxfordshire , 1579 , and was master of Winchester College from 1580 to 1587 , being one of many Welshmen of the period who were masters in English schools. He became prebendary of S. Paul's , 12 Nov. 1584 , and rector of Islip , near Oxford , in 1588 . He was the author of Phrases elegantiores ex Caesaris Commentariis, Cicerone, aliisque, in usum Scholae Winton ( Oxford , 1654 ). He d. 17 Oct. 1601 , and was buried in New College outer chapel .
