LLYWELYN ap MOEL Y PANTRI (d. 1440 ), poet of Llanwnnog, Mont. ,

son of the poet ( Llywelyn ?),who was nicknamed ‘ Moel y Pantri ,’ and father of the poet Owain ap Llywelyn ap Moel y Pantri . He was pupil of a Rhys ap Dafydd ab Iorwerth . His existing poetry includes love poems to a maiden named Euron , one in the form of a dialogue between the poet and his empty purse, and a number of ymryson (controversy) poems addressed to Guto'r Glyn . From his two provocative poems on the outlaws of Coed y Graig (and from suggestions in some of his other poems) it could be thought that the poet was himself one of the band. He turned to religion toward the end of his life, and was buried in the monastery of Strata Marcella . Guto'r Glyn and Rhys Goch Eryri (qq.v.) wrote elegies on his death.

Apparently some of his poems have been misattributed to Iolo Goch (see Iolo Goch ac Eraill , cxxxiii); it is also suggested that his father (‘ Moel y Pantri ’) was the real author of two other poems attributed to Llywelyn in some MSS. ( Iolo Goch ac Eraill , 1925 ed., cxxix).

No details are known concerning the life of his son OWAIN , but a large number of his poems remain in manuscript, see Jones and Lewis , Mynegai ; Bodewryd MS. 1 ; Brogyntyn MSS. 1, 2, 6 ; Cwrtmawr MS. 312 ; Gwysaney MS. 25 ; N.L.W. MSS. 16, 1553, 6681, 8330 . They include poems to Watcyn Fychan of Hergest , Dafydd Llwyd Fychan of Hafod Wen , Gruffudd ap Meredudd of Aberriw , Edward ap Hywel ab Ieuan Llwyd , etc.
