MORGAN ap HUW LEWYS ( fl. c. 1550-1600 ), poet ,

of Hafod-y-wern in the parish of Llanwnda, Caerns. ; son of the chief constable of the commote of Uwch Gwyrfai in 1548 (and not the son of Huw Lewys of Plas-yn-Bont (q.v.) , translator of Perl Mewn Adfyd , as some people have thought). Apparently Tryfan and its surrounds were the homes of Huw ap Lewys and his children, and it was probably through marriage that Morgan became resident at Hafod-y-Wern ; later the place went from another branch of the family and became part of the Llanfair-is-gaer estate . It is not certain whether the poet was the Morgan ap Huw Lewys who received holy orders in 1580 , and who was patronized by Wiliam Glyn of Glynllifon . If so, then he may have been chaplain to Wiliam Glyn for a short period before marrying and settling in Hafod-y-wern . The name Morgan ap Huw Lewys is entered in the list of jurors for 1586 . Information remains concerning only one child of the poet Elin , who m. John Griffith of Madryn Isaf . His poetry, which remains in MSS., includes several religious and moral poems ( cywyddau ) and elegiac englynion to Huw ap Rhisiart of Cefn Llanfair in Llŷn ( N.L.W. MS. 16 ).
